Vinegar Taffy
---------- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05
Title: VINEGAR TAFFY
Categories: Candies
Yield: 60 Servings
1 1/2 c Sugar
1/2 c Water
4 tb Vinegar
1/4 ts Cream of tartar
1 ts Lemon extract
Place sugar, water, vinegar and cream of tartar in saucepan. Cook to
soft-crack stage (285 deg. on candy thermometer). Stir in lemon extract and
pour out on a buttered platter. When cool enough to handle, butter hands
and pull until white and glossy. Cut with buttered scissors into sticks or
cushions. Store in tightly covered tin for several weeks to allow candy to
mellow. This is a recipe of my grandmother's dating back to about 1900.
"Taffy pulls" were a social event in the "old days" - often sponsored by
churches and held at a member's home. The candy, when mellowed, is a lot
like a mint except with a lemon flavor. Very good! Hope you enjoy!
