Apple Pandowdy

1 c Brown sugar, packed
1 1/4 c All-purpose flour; divided
1/2 ts Salt; divided
1 c Water
1 ts Lemon juice
2 ts Baking powder
5 tb Butter or margarine
3/4 c Milk
5 c Apples, peeled; sliced
1/2 ts Ground cinnamon
1/2 ts Ground nutmeg
1 ts Vanilla extract
Cream; optional
Recipe by: Jo Merrill Preparation Time: 1:00 1-In a saucepan, combine brown
sugar, 1/4 cup flour and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Add water and lemon juice; cook
over low heat until thick. Cover and set aside. 2-In a mixing bowl, combine
baking powder and remaining flour and salt. Cut in 3 tablespoons butter.
Add the milk and mix just until moistened (a few lumps will remain); set
aside. 3-Arrange apples in a 9-inch square baking dish; sprinkle with
cinnamon. Add nutmeg, vanilla and remaining butter to sauce; pour over
apples. Drop dough by spoonsful over the sauce. Bake in preheated 350
degree oven until top is browned and apples are tender. Serve warm with
cream if desired. 9 servings.
