Eggless, Milkless, Butterless Cake

2 c Brown sugar
2 c Hot water
2 tb Shortening
1 ts Salt
1 ts Soda
1 pk Seedless raisins
1 ts Cinnamon
1 ts Cloves
3 c Flour; sifted
1 ts Hot water

Boil together sugar, water, shortening, salt, raisins, and spices for 5
minutes. When cold, add the flour and the soda dissolved in 1 teaspoon of
hot water. This makes two loaves, bread pan size. Bake in 325~ over 45
minutes. Be sure to grease pan.

Note. This is also called a depression cake.
