Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a saucepan, melt butter. Add brown sugar
and stir until dissolved. Let mixture cool, then beat in egg. Sift
together flour, salt and baking powder and add to butter-egg mixture
alternately with the cold coffee. Blend in the vanilla and stir in the
chocolate chips and nuts.
Turn into a well-greased 9-inch baking pan. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or
until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.Cut into small squares. 2 1/2 to
3 dozen bars.
Note: For neater bar cookies, line the baking pan with foil before
greasing. When the bars have finished baking, let them cool a few minutes
in the pan. Flip the uncut bars onto a wire rack; remove the foil and let
cool completely, then cut into squares. Bars will cut without ragged edges.
